A Ten-Year Project Completed
This book talks about the global safeguarding model that the Vatican Museums have been successfully testing for several years now. It is a multitrack system in which care of the exhibition environment, prevention of risk conditions, maintenance plans and planning, and restoration works coexist, effectively interacting. It is the result of eight years of work on the “museums-machine”. It analyses its physiology, measures its “breath” through the changes of environment, climate and temperature during the days and seasons, shows the good regular maintenance and preventive conservation practices. It is hoped that this volume will inspire interest in those who are responsible for the management of public collections. Our wish is that it may enter schools of restoration and university lecture halls where the science of conservation is taught.
The preventive and planned conservation of the Vatican Museums is illustrated in this book with simplicity and efficacy. And it is for this reason that I am glad to present the English edition of the manual, which has already inspired great interest in Italian, in the hope therefore of enabling greater dissemination and sharing of our important experience.
